Are open office doents readable with microsoft office applications?

I have been running Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 since they came out in beta over a year ago. I would like to load Ubuntu or Fedora Core on another business machine, but the question of doent compatibility came up. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
