For teenagers in split homes - as a stepmom, how can I tell my stepson how much I love him in a "cool" way?

He seems really close with his dad, but not especially with his birth mother. I feel like sometimes I just don't know how to communicate with him, or get him to open up to me. Any ideas? I claim him as my own and love him just the same.
